Offering both realism and %u201Cadult whimsy%u201D in a textural, richly-colored technique sets this Portland artist apart. Grounded in traditional drawing, painting, graphics, and scratchboard, Epkes has adapted all this to digital expression, including iPhone art. Print and website design round out a career in advertising illustration and newspaper design. The Iowa-born first-generation German received his BFA from Kansas City Art Institute, worked in licensed character development for a major San Francisco production company, and in newspaper graphics and design at the San Diego Tribune and Anchorage Daily News. He has awards from the Society of Newspaper Design, and the 2005 Los Angeles Society of Illustrators Show featured his artwork. Specialty subjects include animals, people, scenics, and food. Clients include World Wildlife Fund, Cirque de Soleil, Latitude, Jager di Paola Kemp, Sheaff Dorman Purins, Consumer Reports, Business News Publishing, Trico Sports, Pensare Design, Wunderman, The Clyde's Restaurant Group, Bridges Design, and HomeStreet Bank. Epkes enjoys the lush Oregon outdoors with his wife and young son and daughter, as well as global travels with them.
